「Welcome 2 America」がリリースされてからもうすぐ1週間、まだあまり聴けておらずビデオもまだ未視聴なのですが、アルバムのあまりの素晴らしさに驚いています。どれほどの称賛の言葉をもってしてもこのアルバムの素晴らしさを語るには全く足りないように思えます。公式の Podcast を聴きましたが、プリンスはなぜこれほどの素晴らしいアルバムを作っておきながらリリースしなかったのか、その理由は関係者には語っていないようです。

まだ未消化の状態なのですが、このアルバムから「1000 Light Years From Here」を取り上げることにします。「1000 Light Years From Here」は私がアルバムを一聴して最も強い感銘を受けた曲です。その感銘は、この曲を聴くたびに強さを増していくように思えます。

このアルバムでは人種問題や社会問題が大きなテーマになっています。この曲のベーシック録音が行われたのは2010年3月11日 (PrinceVault のリンク)で、サブプライム住宅ローン危機とそれを発端とする世界金融危機が深刻な社会問題となっていた時期です。「underwater」は住宅ローンの返済額 (mortgage balance) が住宅価格 (home value) を上回っている状態を指して使われる言葉であり、第1ヴァースの冒頭では、黒人の低所得者層が「underwater morgage / 水面下住宅ローン」に苦しむ状況が歌われているように受け取れます。

プリンスの自叙伝「The Beautiful Ones」のイントロダクションで、共著者のダン・パイペンブリング (Dan Pipenbring) は、本を出すまでの経緯やプリンスとの様々なやりとりを回想しています。その記述の中で、プリンスがダンに次のように質問する場面が出てきます。

"Can we write a book that solves racism?"
「僕らに人種差別を解決する本が書けると思う？」

そこから話は広がり、プリンスは自身が子供の頃に経験したことをダンに語ります。「Sacrifice Of Victor」でも歌われる、強制バス通学 (差別撤廃に向けたバス通学、Disegregation busing) の話が出てきます。以下は「Sacrifice Of Victor」の歌詞です。1967年というとプリンスは9才です。

プリンスはこの政策でリッチな白人の学校に通学させられることになりました。そこでＮワードで罵ってきた相手に手を出したことを思い出し、ダンにこう語ります。

"I felt I had to. Luckily the guy ran away crying. But if there was a fight - where would it end? Where should it end? How do you know when to fight?"
「そうしなければならないと思ったんだ。その時は幸いなことに相手は泣いて逃げていった。だけどもしケンカになっていたとしたら、どこで終わりになる？どこで終わりにすべきなんだ？どんな時に戦うきべきか、どうやったら分かる？」

この問題への答えはどこにあるのでしょうか。そして解決の道があるとすれば、どれくらい先にゴールがあるのでしょうか。

ここから一千光年の先。物理的な話をすれば、それは決して到達することのできない距離です。心を通わせ、分かり合うことなど不可能だと信じ込まされても仕方ないくらい遠く離れているように思えます。しかしそれは真実なのでしょうか。いいえ、そんなはずはありません。プリンスはこの曲ではっきりとそう歌っています。
