上の言葉は、Duane Tudahl の「Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984」の序文で冒頭に引用されているプリンス自身の言葉です。1997年のスパイク・リーとのインタビューでの発言になります。そして下の言葉は、マイテの「The Most Beautiful - My Life With Prince」からの引用です。

プリンスの音楽は、ただの音楽ではありません。プリンスの音楽に触れることは、プリンスの人生に触れることでもあります。また逆に、プリンスの人生を知ることは、プリンスの音楽を知ることでもあります。

プリンスのアーティストとしてのキャリア全体に思いを馳せるとき、キャリアにおいて最初の曲である「For You」と最後の曲である「Big City」が浮かんできます。

プリンスは1978年にアルバム「For You」でデビューしました。そのアルバムの最初に収録されているのが、タイトルトラックである「For You」です。美しいボーカルが多重録音された、アカペラの素敵な小曲です。これ以上プリンスの最初の曲として相応しい曲は考えられません。

プリンスのキャリアで最後のアルバムとなったのは2015年の「HITnRUN Phase 2」で、その最終曲になるのが「Big City」です。このアルバムの最後に相応しい爽快で陽気な曲で、何というか本当に素敵な曲です。

この曲の "お金ならもうあげちゃった (チャチーン)" の後、3分20秒頃から1分ほど続く展開は、個人的には何となく「Sex In The Summer」の後半の展開と重なります。「Sex In The Summer」は、マイテの胎内にいた頃の息子のアミールから取られた超音波心音が使われた曲でした。二人は一緒になったのだろうかと、「Until U're In My Arms Again」もまた心に浮かびます。それが実現した今は、"I'm in the big city when I'm in your arms" - プリンスは抱かれる方の立場になったのかな、なんて思います。

そして最後、"That' it! / おしまい！" という陽気な声と、それに続く長い無音。偶然のいたずらだとしても、あまりにも出来すぎているとしか言いようがありません。下の YouTube は演奏の終わりで再生が切れますが、アルバムではこの後、約50秒の長い無音が続きます。

プリンスが最後までこんな素敵な作品を私達に届けてくれたことに、私は心から感謝します。
